We are very excited about our library’s 40th anniversary celebration on Saturday, April 29!
Check out these wonderful door prizes on offer at the party. You could win a two-hour trail ride from Anchor D Guiding and Outfitting; 18 holes of golf at Turner Valley Golf Course (including a golf cart and $100 gift card); Family Pack from Dawgs Baseball with a gift card for the concession stand; a $150 gift card for local swimming pools; plus cash prizes of $200, $300 and $500. To be eligible to win, just come to he library from 1-4 pm on April 29 and fill in a ticket for the draw. Get additional chances to win a door prize by participating in the “Stampin’ Around” challenge at the celebration.
Local musicians and a magician will entertain, and you can enjoy performances by some of the groups that have made the library their meeting place. Displays will feature a timeline of the library’s history and its evolution to the amazing place it is today. Crystal Salamon is designing a special colouring page and will be on hand to guide children in all sorts of colouring activities. Enjoy catered food, drinks, scrumptious cake, and very short speeches. And come to cheer as we announce the winners of the student essay contest (writing on the theme, “What Does the Library Mean to Me? What should the Library Look Like in the Future?”).
It was in 1983 that the towns of Black Diamond and Turner Valley developed an agreement for joint support of library services for both communities. Previous to that, dating back to 1974, volunteers maintained a library in the Griffiths Centre. In 1979, the library moved to the basement of the Black Diamond town office where it came under municipal jurisdiction. In 1985, the library was officially named the Sheep River Library.
In 2008, under the leadership of Chairperson Diane Osberg, the library board began to envision a lifelong learning centre that would partner with various community groups such as Literacy for Life, MCG Careers, art groups, music clubs and volunteer organizations It soon became clear that this type of library would outgrow its existing basement space. In 2010, the Town of Turner Valley donated he land for the new building and the official sod turning was held on June 30, 2010. In April, 2011, the new building opened and has continued to flourish, providing thousands of lifelong learning opportunities, a place for community groups to meet, and an ever-growing collection of library materials.
